Although I shoot in colour, it is black and white photography that truly stirs my creativity. It not only provides visual drama with subtle tone shifts between dark shadows and highlights but also gives me a real connection to the craft that is black and white. Time in the darkroom while sometimes laborious is also enjoyable, there is still magic in watching the image take form before your eyes as it sloshes about in the developer.
I use film exclusively; for colour I use transparency film‚ mainly Fuji Velvia and Fuji Provia. For black and white photographs I use Ilford Delta 100 film in ID-11 developer and Fuji Acros. I print the majority of my Black and White photographs by hand using Ilford Warm Tone FB and Agfa fibre based silver gelatine papers‚ I use standard enlarging techniques.
For the majority of my Landscapes I use a Hasselblad 503 CW 6 x 6cm format camera. I mainly use 80mm and 50 mm Zeiss lenses and for portraits the 120mm Makro–Planar I like the Zeiss lenses for landscapes as you can stop them down for maximum depth of field and lose no image quality I use a hand held light meter Sekonic L508 For travel photography I use a Leica M7 35mm rangefinder camera ‚ all that is said about Leica lenses is true especially for Black and White film.
I have had my work published in many magazines‚ newspapers and journals; my most recent work was the photography for the book Land Out Of Time (The Blue Mountains Landscape Then & Now) Recent awards include the judges prize for the Break O´Day competition held in Tasmania Australia.
